Yo Bitbucket is just deleting Mercurial repositories by June 2020 -- they've given no reason why they aren't make mercurial repositories read-only. Deleting them wholesale seems so unnecessary and hostile.

"For every seemingly silly rule and regulation, there's a story about the time that the rule would've come in real handy."

For me, today, that rule is "if a hot water heater is seemingly not working, try running the cold water to see if it gets hot. Because some people apparently switch it at the faucet, for personal preference."

Which is not something I was aware of so was like, testing for shorts in the water heater before I realized running the hot wasn't pulling ANY from the water heater.

one thing that's really resonated with me is this (pretty old) post by @eevee, and especially the part that says

I’ve seen quite a few small communities gradually unravel because the moderators erred on the side of not banning people who were clearly violating the spirit but not the letter of the rules. As jerks gradually leaked in, the people who didn’t want to be around jerks gradually drifted away, and the community was left as nothing more than a sludgy residue.

"Also at that time, I remember asking the head DB guy about a specific metric, and he ran a live query against the database in front of me. It took a while to return, so he used the time to explain how, in an ordinary setup, the query would have locked all the tables and brought down the entire site, but he was using special SQL-fu to make it run transparently.

We got so engrossed in the details of this topic that half an hour passed before we noticed that everyone had stopped working and was running around in a frenzy. Someone finally ran over and asked him if he was doing a query, he hit Control-C, and Twitter came back up. "

their database is probably locked up because someone used an actual emoji on there and the whole website is blown away by this strange new thing known as UTF-8
