so uh

i just installed windows on my upgraded PC build, and I was expecting my capture card to work, but NOPE. as it turns out, AverMedia actually ENDED SUPPORT for the capture card I have so it does not work properly on versions of windows higher than 1909. They will not be updating the drivers to fix it

great, i now have a useless capture card.

I'm gonna have to cancel my upcoming streams until I find a temporary workaround for this, until then, i'm going to have to buy a new capture card

i'm really fucking pissed off at avermedia right now

Show thread

anyway would anyone be willing to donate me any money to buy a new capture card that isn't an avermedia one because fucking hell

Show thread

i don't even know what capture card i can even get to replace this one, if anyone has any suggestions for a cheap one that can do 60fps 1080p capture and actually works on the current version of windows 10 please let me know

Show thread

had two people suggest the Elgato HD60S, if there aren't any other reasonable options i'm gonna start a fundraiser so i can get my card replaced with this one

Show thread

this one costs a lot of money but it looks like it'd be able to serve me far better than the avermedia one ever did. I'd assume connecting it directly to the pcie also means the latency will be far better too

Show thread

i wonder if i can get one cheaper second hand

Show thread

seems they go for about £100 refurbished, not too bad!

@Violet who even makes good ones anymore... elgato's capture cards can't capture analog video anymore and we don't know of any other brands of good capture cards

@Violet (well, their old cards still work, they just don't make any that can do analog video anymore)

@Felthry @Violet Just out of curiosity, what happens if you try to use one of those analog-to-HDMI boxes first?

@Ylfingr @Violet it'll work i'm sure, but those tend to be finicky and do weird things to the signal

@Violet I've heard people singing Elgato's praises more often than not. They've got the HD60 S for about £150, but there's also the Cam Link for about £120 as well.

@Jo i'm kinda sketchy about elgato, i've seen people reporting the same issues with them that avermedia has had as well in the past

@Violet AFAIK the Cam Link at least can be used without drivers, so you'll be safe in that respect.

@Violet I got a 30€ one from China that does kinda-1080p60-but-it's-probably-720p60, you can get similar ones without passthrough for ~15€

@Violet do be aware that the hd60s can only capture hdmi. their slightly older hd60 can be found on ebay, and it can do hdmi as well as component, composite, and s-video

@Felthry ergh that's a shame. I only have HDMI devices anyway but this is gonna be a huge drawback if I plan on doing retro console streaming in future

@Violet the HD60 is still perfectly functional last we streamed (which was a few months ago)

@Violet oh hang on i mixed things up, it's the game capture HD, not the HD60 that has the analog video support

@Felthry I think i'll just stick to the HD60, i'd rather get a newer device than an older one just to be sure it lasts. If i ever need analogue video in future i'll probably hack up a solution

@Violet oh yeah, if it's connected via pcie, there will be almost no latency at all; you can honestly just play the game via the capture card unless it's a game that demands extremely perfect latency

@sharkNserg @Violet i feel like that would be the same sort of game that you can only play well on a CRT

@Violet do you want some advice that might be helpful?

@Violet you could dual boot an older copy of windows, exclusively for streaming

warning though, not even i do this just because of how annoying it is to have to reboot for streaming, and maintaining a separate installation (my capture card doesn't work in linux)

@xenon that's a bit too far for me, not gonna do that

@Violet Fucking hell. That's probably more disgraceful than Roxio's shite not being usable on Linux. :blobrageangry:

@sharkNserg possibly! probably going to continue the sage streams on sundays since i don't need the capture card for those.

@sharkNserg also raccoon & chill is still very possible if i can throw in some laid back games to share
