computer operating systems

i used to be pretty obsessive over this stuff back in the 2000s and early 2010s but these days with how computers are they really aren't very interesting anymore. don't get me wrong I still love installing older and maybe more obscure OS releases in virtual machines from time to time but that spark where I'd get excited for new operating systems just isn't there anymore, shit is all the same

computer operating systems

I'd still be a bit more excited about Mac OS releases but they ditched nvidia support and cut out a large portion of hackintosh users so fuck that.

@Violet welcome to the technology disillusionment club 2021

re: computer operating systems

@avie i think the last time i was enthusiastic about this stuff was the jump from windows 7 to windows 8

re: computer operating systems

@Violet windows 8 still looks bloody gorgeous imho

re: computer operating systems

@Violet as does windows vista

re: computer operating systems

@avie vista was a major change in itself and set the base for one of the most successful versions of windows

re: computer operating systems

@Violet i still think 7 shouldve stuck more closely with how vista looked

re: computer operating systems

@avie and I guess technically, windows 8 is the same, which basically set the base for the design styles we see in 10

re: computer operating systems

@Violet @avie the only reason i stopped using windows 8.1 on my dual boot is support ended extremely fast

windows 10 is what made me drop windows for anything that didn't absolutely 100% require windows

i didn't /like/ windows 8.1, but it wasn't too different from what i thought was alright about 7. 10 feels like beta version software to me

re: computer operating systems

@Violet @avie you know what? i'd actually call 10 alpha version software, since they have their new settings app that is nowhere near the functionality of the control panel

re: computer operating systems

@xenon @Violet removing the inconsistency of having both settings and control panel is part of what 10x aims to fix amongst a lot of other things

re: computer operating systems

@avie @Violet that'd be alright if i trusted microsoft to not just remove the control panel with an incomplete replacement

windows 10x feels more like a chromebook to me, and maybe that's the intention?

re: computer operating systems

@xenon @Violet it feels that way at least

re: computer operating systems

@avie @xenon yeah, the early phase is not intended as a replacement for 10, but more microsoft trying Windows RT again and doing it right

re: computer operating systems

@avie @xenon this made me go through my old screen dumps folder

here is a screenshot i did from one of the first builds of 8 that had the start screen (iirc). deadname censored

re: computer operating systems

@Violet same with game consoles, really. it's all become very homogeneous

nintendo at least is still making interesting hardware configurations, but everything else just blurs together

re: computer operating systems

@snailerotica yeah, nothing from the software side makes me go wow anymore, it's all the same
