@codl This actually bit me in the butt during game development ages ago, when I used the alpha channel in a sprite sheet, but I was also accidentally using a specific color as transparency, and with both kicked in at once, all the areas I'd deleted were visible because they weren't the right color.

@codl alternatively use the tool designed for it, under filters->blur.

E.g. "pixelize" could help:
