i wish EC2 would bill per minute or per 15 minutes or something

codl :heart_nb: :heart_ace: @codl

does anyone know of a clown computing provider that bills per <1h periods. and also has instances with biiig cpus

@codl I don't have an answer but that typo is giving me some amusing mental images. :blobrofl:

@Jo oh that was fully intentional 😏

i just need to transcode a few videos dangit i dont need an instance for a full hour. and elastic transcoder costs an arm and a leg

a c5.large is 8.5 cents per hour, but 3 cents in spot pricing right now. so i guess if i use a spot instance at the right time it's like im paying for ~20 minutes 😝

@codl i think the only reasonable way to use spot pricing is with a program that has a big queue of work and schedules it whenever the price drops Enough

@riking i only really need this for occasionally encoding a few things so i could literally just watch the price myself and fire it when it's low. also im sure there are some daily and weekly trends

@codl misread CPUs as cups hope this helps

@puppy @codl "CPUs" are cups now, RAM is actual rams 🐏. The more you know

@codl how about digitalocean? I’m pretty sure they bill by the minute

@alice DO silently throttled a droplet i was using because i was using too much CPU so i'm not sure i want to put my CPU-intensive stuff on there :/

@alice also nah their pricing page says hourly billing

@codl that’s shitty! They def market some instances as “high cpu” so idk if that’s changed

@alice to be fair i *was* trying to run elasticsearch on their tiniest droplet and it *was* non stop crashing and restarting because it was running out of ram. so it was probably also using up a lot of I/O

but i would have appreciated a warning at least

@codl goog compute engine bills by the second after a one minute minimum and has thicc cpu boys available but is goog

@djsundog i cant use goog cos they only work with businesses here

@djsundog yea im guessing theyre doing that to avoid taxes in some way
