autism thoughts, routines

i hate how much allistics popularised the idea that autistic ppl are obsessed with routine. like ofc routine is a big thing for a lot of autistic people but its to the point where allistics think you can't be autistic unless you do exactly the same things at exactly the same times every day like a robot and its super harmful to autists with adhd and autists who just don't rely on routine

autism thoughts, routines

and yes! there are people who do live their lives like that! and they should be respected and protected! but the allistic idea that that is The Way To Be Autistic sucks and is bad

autism thoughts, routines

@internetwolf I struggle with any kind of routine whatsoever, please help m,e

autism thoughts, routines

@luna same same same same and it was literally The Reason that I never thought i could be autistic until i was 17

autism thoughts, routines

@internetwolf it's part of why i sttill think i can't be autistic

autism thoughts, routines

@luna routines are not a requirement for autism, there is no Specific Required Symptom for autism, and no autistic person will ever have every symptom (hell, some of em contradict each other)

u have to remember autism dx is heavily gatekept and that's why theres no shame in self dx if u feel its right for u

autism thoughts, routines

@internetwolf i don't know what's right for me, I'm scared of literally everything

autism thoughts, routines

@luna its understandable, this stuff is big and confusing but you don't have to work it all out at once (or ever, if you don't feel like you need to)

autism thoughts, routines

@internetwolf I mean, I've more or less come to terms with the fact I'm Very Probably Autistic because there's an overwhelming amount of arguments for it, it's just that I also have 13 years of immense ableism burned into me from how *every single person* treated me growing up

autism thoughts, routines

@luna @internetwolf as someone who's been professionally punted between ADHD and Autism diagnoses as a kid and ended up settling square in ADHD-I as an adult, I hereby give you permission to call yourself "Autistic" or "under suspicion of autism", whichever feels more wearable to you.

autism thoughts, routines

@luna @internetwolf also, I've been on basically Every ADHD Meds Under The Sun over the course of my school years, you really need to shop around with whoever does your prescriptions.
also, Dark Chocolate helps. Trust me. 1" square of 70% in the morning makes me a lot more mentally level through the day

autism thoughts, routines

@internetwolf @luna same here (but i was in my later 20s)

autism thoughts, routines

@internetwolf
as an autistic person with chronic pain, i have a few different routines i run through over time, but most of my days are pretty distinct from each other. most of my routine-oriented things are because trying new things (food especially) takes energy for me that i don't necessarily have

autism thoughts, routines

@internetwolf I feel like neurotypicals latch onto one (1) symptom and just generalise it to be the entire disorder

autism thoughts, routines

@wingedseahorse honestly tru they do it with pretty much everything

"depression means sad" "ocd means cleaning things" "adhd means hyperactive" etc etc
