avery @puppy

tbh the parental advisory explicit content logo needs updating into something a bit more subtle

something that isnt this giant black and white block that spoils album artwork like the german rating sticker on the boxart for breath of the wild,

@puppy i see a lot of artwork using this transparent variant lately, which works a lot better for most things

@puppy also, upon thought, wasnt the whole idea of the "parental advisory" sticker for it to be *not* subtle so that parents know it isnt suitable for kids

@puppy if you're thinking Breath of the Wild is bad, look at DS cover art

@puppy that's the legally prescribed minimum size of the badge

@theoutrider yeah i read that they require the dang thing to be the same size regardless of how big the box is

@puppy which is obviously also why it's such a problem with BotW because Switch boxes are tiny

@theoutrider @puppy they had to straight up remove Yoshi from the Super Smash Bros Ultimate box art to make room for the USK rating

@theoutrider christ, the vita boxes suffer the most

@theoutrider though on an unrelated note i will say "nur auf playstation" has a really nice ring to it

@theoutrider you lot get all the fun language stuff, you get umlauts and cool mouths sounds and a letter just for an "Ss" sound and you can just jam multiple words together to create a new word,

@puppy ß and ss actually aren't 100% equivalent

eg "Maße" and "Masse" are actual opposites ("measurements"/"measured quantities" vs "mass"/"large amount")

@theoutrider yeah i figured i was wrong about that part lmfao

good to know mind

@puppy @theoutrider It's a really great change because it introduces more breaking changes in case-collation rules in computers (e.g. Javascript used to toUpperCase ß as "SS", but you can't downcase every SS to ß)

@puppy the difference is in pronunciation, the "a" in Maße is a long vowel while the one in Masse is short

this is actually a specific rule after the 2002 spelling reform - in many cases ß was removed to make the language "more consistent" but after long vowels, ß remains to avoid ambiguity

@puppy so even though "gross" is not a word in German, "groß" (large) remains spelled with an ß

@puppy etymology wise, ß used to be "sz" (and one of the names used for the letter actually is "Eszett") but because that actual combination is totally out of date, "ss" has become the usual substitute in modern German spelling

@puppy the character is a ligature of the "long s" (which exists in English as well I think?) and the dated glyph for z which looks a bit like a 3 shifted down

@puppy oh god looking for long s things I've found a thing

@theoutrider education was never part of the deal when i signed up to this shitposting network i want my money back

@theoutrider (im joking its cool to know about this stuff but aaa)
