the new DM runs a very brutal game and idk if i necessarily prefer it because my last character literally died because i got a 1 on a perception check that i made (NOT a save or anything)

like i kinda feel like making 1's interesting is one thing but killing off characters or derailing a thread because someone rolled a 1 is an entirely different thing.

players at this table are actually hesitant to roll checks like that now because they're scared if they get a 1 they'll be killed off

i think none of our parties would get through a session if they just died on crit fails

you see a thing and you walk towards it. make a dex save

*i fail that*

you fall off a cliff. make a dex save

*i fail that*

you take [all my hitpoints] falling damage.

*i'm now unconcious*

make a death save

*critical fail, so i take 2 death fails*

okay, you now have one chance left, make a death save

*fail*

your character dies

@catoutofbed so it wasn't an instadeath but it really seems a bit cruel to take a failed roll which tells you whether you see anything or not as "you walk off a cliff into danger"
