Arend (they) 🏳️‍⚧️😷🎙️🍉🏴🕊<p>The plug-in in question: RM-2 by 5dB5. This thing sounds surprisingly gorgeous for the price. Whatever anti-aliasing it has got, it does it well. hyaline.systems<p>O, hi, we wrote a new blog post!</p><p>If you want to turn a Raspberry Pi or Linux computer into a music instrument or an installation piece, then you need to consider how to start your software when power is turned on. This is surprisingly hard, but we've made it a bit easier with a small guide with tips and tricks and an example of booting directly into a <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/SuperCollider" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SuperCollider</span></a> program once powered on.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>linux</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/raspberrypi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>raspberrypi</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/musicproduction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>musicproduction</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/supercollider" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>supercollider</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/puredata" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>puredata</span></a></p><p><a href="https://hyaline.systems/blog/linux-audio-startup/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">hyaline.systems/blog/linux-aud</span><span class="invisible">io-startup/</span></a></p>

Deborah Pickett<p>"Leave the Light On" wouldn't have been possible without <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://musician.social/@elsemusic" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>elsemusic</span></a></span>'s efforts. I tagged her right at the beginning of the process because of her lovely laid back Fedivision 2024 entry "Tap My Toes", with exactly the vibe I was chasing. She provided the swinging drum track for this song and did all the recording and track cleanup for Aelyth's vocals, all in the middle of recording for sideSister's next album. When the vocal track turned up a few weeks later it was pretty much perfect.</p><p>I'm also grateful to my collaborators for letting me put my mediocre guitar talents on show. Mine's the strummed chords on the 2 of the verse and the main beats of the chorus. All spliced together in post because have you _seen_ the Fm11 chord fingering?</p><p>It's also been a new challenge for me putting together an album mixed and mastered by different artists. Everyone did a sterling job and I hardly had to meddle with anyone's track at all. I mainly became a wrangler for Faircamp manifest files.</p><p><a href="https://old.mermaid.town/tags/MusicProduction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MusicProduction</span></a> <a href="https://old.mermaid.town/tags/Music" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Music</span></a> <a href="https://old.mermaid.town/tags/IndieMusic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>IndieMusic</span></a></p>
Deborah Pickett<p>It was much fun recording and producing "Leave the Light On" from <a href="https://old.mermaid.town/tags/ComfyCollaborations" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ComfyCollaborations</span></a> <a href="https://music.futzle.com/comfy-collaborations/2/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">music.futzle.com/comfy-collabo</span><span class="invisible">rations/2/</span></a></p><p>I've never produced music with someone else's vocals before. In ways it's a bit constraining because I have to work with the recording I've got, but it's a good challenge to work within constraints sometimes. Aelyth's mezzo-soprano was perfect for this song, just what I imagined when I wrote it. If you want to hear more of her voice, go check out sideSister at <a href="https://sidesister.com/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">sidesister.com/</span><span class="invisible"></span></a> and follow band member <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://musician.social/@elsemusic" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>elsemusic</span></a></span>.</p><p>It was also wonderful as always to work with <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://aus.social/@jimbob" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>jimbob</span></a></span> who knows exactly the kind of bluesy guitar work I love. I shamelessly comped together five of his ad-libs for that instrumental. If you want to hear more of his music, he's on Bandcamp at <a href="https://milford.bandcamp.com/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">milford.bandcamp.com/</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p>I splurged during the November sales and bought Audio Modeling's SWAM Saxophones audio plugin (<a href="https://audiomodeling.com/swam-engine/solo-woodwinds/swam-saxophones/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">audiomodeling.com/swam-engine/</span><span class="invisible">solo-woodwinds/swam-saxophones/</span></a>). This is an amazing VST for synthesizing saxophones, with so many dials to give the sound a natural feel. If you listen carefully you can even hear where I've pitch bent almost every note.</p><p>This song has been earworming me since I wrote it in November. If you attended my A Christmas Wasted With Deb Pickett show in December you have seen a rare performance of me doing my own vocals on the song. Fortunately now, the earworm has given way to, variously, every other song that's on the Comfy Collaborations album. Yay?</p><p><a href="https://old.mermaid.town/tags/MusicProduction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MusicProduction</span></a> <a href="https://old.mermaid.town/tags/Music" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Music</span></a> <a href="https://old.mermaid.town/tags/IndieMusic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>IndieMusic</span></a></p>

One of the talks I would have presented at #FOSDEM, had I not fallen ill, was on #VirtualOrchestration, and particularly my personal workflow in that regard. It sucked not being able to talk about it in person there, so I decided to write about it instead.

It's a long post, but hopefully interesting enough... I'm particularly interested to hear about how you do it instead (if you do), and if my approach makes sense. Boosts welcome!
