A couple of weeks ago we supplied a few large canvas prints of local scenes to a new Community Hub opened here on the #IsleofWight

We discovered today that the #NationalGallery were displaying #Constable #TheCornfield there for the next 5 days.

This type of thing is rare here, and given that it's only a minute away from our shop I went to have a look. My mind was blown seeing one of my husband's photographs right next to a masterpiece! I was not expecting that!

4/ John Constable's admiration for the #Dutch #Landscape #Artist Jacob van Ruisdael is well documented. The debt is visible, their landscapes share much:

+ sweeping skies with depth,
+ dramatic cloudscapes - those 2 boys could do precipitation,
+ tonality - changes of lightness and darkness to suggest atmosphere,
+ dabs of bright red, vermillion to be precise - for balance, to attract the eye and to draw you inward and onward.

Artistic plagiarism, but in a good way 🎨

3/ The development of #Dutch #Landscape painting had a profound effect on artists the other side of the #Noordzee (that's your actual Dutch, that is). Gainsborough, Constable and Turner were smitten. van Rusidael, in particular, provided inspiration.

How much? C proposed to his wife, Maria, after seeing a print of the 'The Shore at Egmond-aan-Zee'. It reminded him, so it is said, of Bognor... and all that was dear to him 🙃

And red highlights. But more on that tomorrow...
